The Halo SleepSackįirst we tried a Halo SleepSack which is nice because it has a zipper up from the bottom so you can change a diaper without unswaddling, ideally. I began my search for the perfect swaddle solution to help my baby sleep longer and more comfortably. I also learned about infants getting hip dysplasia from swaddles that were too tight. I read an article about swaddling safety that confirmed my fears and recommended just using a swaddle sack. Then I recalled the “no loose blankets” portion of the SIDS sleep safety recommendations and worried about the blanket riding up around his neck and smothering him or that he might be getting too hot. Next up we tried a really large muslin baby swaddle blanket but he squirmed around a lot in it, could get his arms free no matter what we did and it kept ending up bunched up around his chin. We ended up using these for daytime naps and blankets in his stroller. Probably because we have such a big baby. We tried the triangle fold and the square fold but they just would not stay put properly. They were oddly shaped as rectangles and way too small almost immediately. When we got home we started off by swaddling with some soft receiving blankets. None of the classes or nurses told us anything about swaddle safety, the correct temperature for infants to be when they sleep, what they should wear or any sleep sack alternatives. At the class the teacher mentioned the zip up/ velcro sacks as convenient but didn’t mention they would be any safer.Īt the hospital at least 3 nurses came in and taught us how to swaddle. In the newborn care classes by Kaiser we attended there was a big emphasis on swaddling with a blanket. Babies have have reflexes that can cause them to startle and wake themselves up. Swaddling infants is a great way to keep babies calm and help them sleep during their first 3 months, or the “4th trimester”. Swaddling newborns helps them sleep better Finding the best swaddle is hard! Here are some product reviews from our personal swaddle quest along with a few safety tips and resources we found along the way.
